‘Lost every hope, allow me to die in jail’: Jet Airways’ Naresh Goyal breaks down in court

NEW DELHI: Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal, who is accused of a Rs 538 crore fraud at Canara Bank, appeared in court on Saturday and said that he has “lost all hope of life” in an emotional appeal to the judge.
Goyal, with tears in his eyes and folded hands, said that he has “lost every hope” and it will be “better if he dies in jail” than living in his present condition.
He revealed that his wife, Anita, is in the advanced stage of cancer and he misses her a lot.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had arrested Goyal on September 1 last year in connection with the alleged bank fraud. He is currently in judicial custody at Arthur Road jail in Mumbai.
During the hearing, Goyal, visibly shaking and emotional, explained the precarious state of his health.
He mentioned that his wife is bedridden and their only daughter is also unwell. Goyal also expressed his limitations in receiving assistance from the jail staff.
The judge observed Goyal’s trembling body and noted that he required assistance even to stand.
Goyal further disclosed his physical ailments, including swollen and painful knees, difficulty in urinating and passing blood in urine.
He expressed his concerns about visiting J J Hospital due to the inconvenience and long queues, which hindered proper examination and follow-up care.
Goyal emphasized that these issues were severely impacting his health.
Goyal pleaded with the court not to send him to J J Hospital and instead “allow him to die in jail.”
He believed that at 75 years old, he had lost all hope for the future, and it would be better if he passed away in his current situation.
He expressed his inability to attend court proceedings due to his health condition but insisted on being present this time to personally submit his concerns.
After hearing Goyal’s plea, the judge assured him that his mental and physical health would be taken care of and appropriate steps would be taken.
The court directed Goyal’s lawyers to address his health concerns.
Goyal’s bail plea, which cites multiple medical ailments, will be further heard on January 16.
The Enforcement Directorate’s case against Goyal, his wife Anita, and former executives of Jet Airways under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) stems from a complaint filed by Canara Bank.
The bank alleged that it had sanctioned credit and loans worth Rs 848.86 crore to Jet Airways, with Rs 538.62 crore outstanding.
