Maltese’s first career brace delivers Tech 3-0 victory against Miami

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech closed Thompson Field on Sunday, Oct. 22 by dominating the Hurricanes 3-0 in the final home match of the season. 

The Hokies’ improved their record to 7-7-3 (4-5 ACC), while Miami dropped to 3-9-4 (2-6-1 ACC). Sunday’s win over the Hurricanes puts Tech into seventh in the ACC, one point behind Wake Forest (13) as the season draws to a close on Thursday. 

“I’m pleased with the result today,” said head coach Chugger Adair. “The ladies played well from start to finish controlling most of the match and were able to put three in the back of the net. I’m proud of the group, and happy for the seniors to be able to go out on a 3-0 shutout at Thompson Field. We are excited to get on the road to play Pitt as we look towards the ACC or NCAA tournament.”

How it Happened
Natalie Mitchell gave the Hokies an early lead over Miami scoring in the 13th minute of the match, 1-0. Mitchell’s goal is  her eighth goal of the season. 

Tech went unchallenged in the first half holding a 7-0 shot advantage after the first 45 minutes of play. Miami was forced to play one player down in the 42nd minute after Hallie Salas received her second yellow card of the day. 

Junior Sophie Maltese seized the opportunity to make her mark on the season scoring her first goal of the season in the 69th minute, assisted by Taylor Bryan and Samantha DeGuzman

Maltese’s 77th minute dagger secured the match for the Hokies 3-0.
