Max Ad-Free Plan Drops 4K Streams

The standard Max ad-free plan is dropping a key feature that will encourage users to either upgrade or consider cancelling their subscription.

As Variety reports, Warner Bros. Discovery is informing anyone who subscribes to the Max standard ad-free plan that they are losing the ability to watch streams in 4K. Instead, the maximum resolution will be limited to 1080p. On top of that, you’ll only be able to stream on two devices concurrently rather than the current maximum of three devices.

The changes come into affect on or after Dec. 5, but the price of the streaming service is remaining the same: $15.99 per month or $149.99 per year. It therefore classes as a reduction in value for money for existing subscribers.

If you want to keep watching Max movies and TV shows in 4K with Dolby Atmos, an upgrade to the Ultimate Ad-Free plan is required. It costs $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year. For that extra $5 per month you also gain the ability to stream on four devices concurrently and keep up to 100 downloads for offline viewing. The standard ad-free plan limits downloads to 30.

Back in May, Warner Bros Discovery combined HBO Max with content from Discovery+ to form the new Max streaming service. The merging of the two services came with a warning that 4K streams would eventually disappear from the standard ad-free plan, which we are now seeing happen. Meanwhile, Disney is taking steps to grab a bigger piece of the streaming pie by announcing this week that it’s spending billions to gain full control of Hulu.
