Mediatek Dimensity 8300 vs Snapdragon 7 Gen 3: The battle of the mid-range chipsets | Technology News

After announcing their flagship chips a while ago, both Mediatek and Qualcomm have unveiled their latest mid-range chips, Dimensity 8300 and the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3. These are likely to be featured on more devices that will be affordable, making them mainstream value-for-money chips for high-performance Android phones.

Similar to their more expensive siblings, these chips come supercharged with generative AI capabilities, an octa-core CPU cluster with hybrid configuration, and a capable GPU.

While they may have some similarities, both chips are distinct based on their performance. Here is how the new Dimensity 8300 SoC competes against Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 3.

Mediatek Dimensity 8300 vs Snapdragon 7 Gen 3: CPU

While both processors have an octa-core CPU cluster, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 makes use of a 1:3:4 configuration, with one high-performance core with 2.63GHz clock speed, three medium-performance cores with 2.4GHz clock speed, and four efficient cores with 1.8GHz clock speed.

The Mediatek Dimensity also has a 1:3:4 configuration, however, with a slightly higher clock speed, with a single 3.35GHz core, three cores with 3.2GHz, and four efficiency cores with 2.2GHz clock speed. Both chips are fabbed by TSMC using a 4nm process with high-performance and medium-performance CPU cores based on Arm Cortex-A710 architecture and efficiency cores based on Arm Cortex-A510 architecture. On paper, it is very evident that the Dimensity 8300 has a more capable CPU than the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3.

Mediatek Dimensity 8300 vs Snapdragon 7 Gen 3: GPU

These two chips have completely different GPUs, while the Dimensity 8300 makes use of the Arm Mali-G615 MC6 graphics, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 has an undisclosed Adreno GPU. As per the leaked AnTuTu score of the Dimensity 8300, it has clocked 54,86,15 points in the GPU test, and right now, there is no information about the graphics capabilities of the Adreno graphics on the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3.

Mediatek Dimensity 8300 vs Snapdragon 7 Gen 3: NPU

The Dimensity 8300 is equipped with the MediaTek APU 780, which is said to be based on the same architecture as the APU 790 on the Dimensity 9300, and the chip can process generative AI models on device with up to 10 billion parameters using faster transformer-based generative AI technology.

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 comes with Qualcomm Hexagon NPU, and the company claims that it offers 61 per cent better AI performance than the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. The company has highlighted that by using on-device generative AI capabilities, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 will support features like real-time translation and transcription.

Additional features

Other key highlights of the Dimensity 8300 include Wi-Fi 6E support, enhanced 5G capability with up to 5.17Gbps downlink speed, up to 320 MP camera support, up to 120Hz QHD+ resolution display support, UFS 4.0 storage standard support, and up to 4K 60fps video recording capability.

Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 also offers Wi-Fi 6E, up to 5Gbps downlink speed, up to 200 MP camera support, and up to 4K resolution display support with 60fps. However, it only supports up to UFS 3.1 storage standard and Bluetooth 5.3, while the Dimensity 8300 offers the latest Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity.

Verdict

Overall, the Mediatek Dimensity 8300 seems to have an upper hand over the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3. However, do note that the performance of a chip entirely depends on the software optimisation and the cooling solution incorporated on the phone. And it is also interesting to see if brands will launch phones with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 and the Dimensity 8300 at a similar price range.
