Should Ten Hag be sacked?
That’s the question of everyone’s lips after Manchester United’s defeat to FC Copenhagen last night.
United are bottom of their Champions League group and face a huge mountain to climb to rescue a place in the last-16.
But should United crash out at the group stage, would that make Ten Hag’s position untenable?
That was the question put to Simon Jordan this morning, and he made it clear where he stands…
“It’s difficult to make arguments for the longevity of Ten Hag’s by current standards, because obviously Manchester United’s aim was to evolve,” said the talkSPORT pundit.
“When Ed Woodward left we had an off-the-record briefing with him, and none of it was particularly interesting or valuable, but one of the questions we asked him was do you think Manchester United will win the Premier League in the next five years? And his answer was yes.
“But at this moment in time, this is not a very compelling Manchester United.
“So if they’re getting knocked out of the Champions League it will strengthen the argument for those who want Ten Hag out and it will weaken the resolve of those who want to keep him in.
“I have made my position clear, for whatever that’s worth, on Ten Hag – I don’t think Ten Hag has exhibited the characteristics from the first moment I saw to where we are today.
“It’s easy to fire people, but it’s much more difficult to replace them with someone meaningful.
“Mediocrity can’t be rewarded. They’ve won the League Cup which is a good competition to win and he got third in the table, but I don’t think he’s good enough to be the Manchester United manager.
“But it depends what the brief is. If the brief is we must get into the top four and must achieve things in the Champions League, and they don’t achieve those things, then he gets the sack.
“If you’re spending £200million on transfers every season your brief must be that you’re trying to get very close to winning the league, and they’re not getting any closer.
“So how much time do you give him?”
