North Charleston officials open new sports complex in ribbon cutting

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – North Charleston cuts the ribbon to a new sports facility Thursday and community members have a modern sports amenity in their neighborhood.

The city of North Charleston invested $25 million to build the North Charleston Sports Complex after demolishing the Danny Jones Athletic Center over a year ago. The new sports facility has a 25-meter competitive pool, and a multi-use gymnasium for basketball, volleyball and badminton. Visitors can enjoy the five outdoor tennis courts, multi-use roller rink and playing field.

Mayor Reggie Burgess thanks citizens for their support and tax dollars towards the new space that gives the youth access to sports tools.

“The North Charleston Sports Complex is a testament to our enduring commitment to community and wellness. Built for our residents, this facility underscores our dedication to enriching lives through comprehensive recreational opportunities,” Burgess says. “It signifies our ongoing effort to ensure that North Charleston remains a place where community and health go hand in hand.”

City officials say the new space will increase the city’s position as a premier spot for sporting events. Officials say it will better the local economy with increased sports tourism by bringing regional and national tournaments to the city.

Burgess says the complex allows sports fans to be entertained and participate in sports. Burgess says the center will build the minds of young athletes and elevate them just as the former center did for him.

“Because of this facility, I was taught the basics of sports. Basketball, football and track and baseball. It happened right here in this sports complex in 1970,” Burgess says. “I know what it did for me, I’ve seen what it did for Carlos Dunlap. I’ve seen what it did for Nehemiah Broughton. And it can be the same as anybody else in the city of North Charleston.”

Visitors can tour the center until 7 p.m. Thursday. Community members can use the tennis courts and roller rinks starting Friday. The entire facility’s opening day is Monday.
