North Kansas City High School shooting outside basketball game

Multiple law enforcement agencies converged on North Kansas City High School Saturday night after an incident at the school. The North Kansas City Police Department confirmed its officers were called to the scene at the high school along with members of the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. A letter to parents sent by North Kansas City School District officials said a shooting ocurred outside of the school on the east side of the building during a basketball game. The North Kansas City Hornets were set to take on the Staley Falcons as part of the Class 6 District 8 High School Basketball Tournament. A debate tournament was also scheduled to take place at North Kansas City High School Saturday evening. In a letter sent to parents, district officials said police were already present on scene in a security role at the school when the shooting happened and responded immediately. All individuals inside the building were placed on lockdown while police worked to determine what happened. The letter to parents went on to say so far two to three potential victims are being provided with medical assistance. North Kansas City Police told KMBC 9’s Peyton Headlee that two people were injured in a shooting at the end of the basketball game. It is unsure if that shooting took place inside or outside the school. KMBC 9 News crews on the scene noted a large section of the campus blocked off by crime scene tape. Both victims are said to be in critical condition, at least one is a juvenile. So far no suspects are in custody. Police are canvassing the area to learn more about what led up to the shooting.
