North, west shores could see high surf | News, Sports, Jobs

Maui’s north shore and Molokai’s north and west shores are under a high surf warning from 6 a.m. today to 6 p.m. Wednesday, with waves expected to reach as high as 35 feet in some places, according to the National Weather Service.

The surf is anticipated to rapidly build to 25 to 35 feet along north-facing shores of both islands and 18 to 24 feet along west-facing shores of Molokai today.

Very strong breaking waves and powerful currents are expected, and waves breaking in channel entrances may make navigating the channels dangerous.

The weather service warned the public to stay away from the affected coastlines, be prepared for road closures and postpone entering or leaving channels affected by the high surf until the large waves subside.
