Not just extended software updates, Google commits to offer spare parts for Pixel 8 series for 7 years

Google unveiled its latest smartphones, the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, just a few days ago. One of the standout features of this announcement is Google’s commitment to providing seven years of operating system (OS) updates for these phones. However, Google is taking this commitment a step further by introducing additional incentives.

Swapping out parts of a high-end smartphone can indeed be a costly affair, especially when it comes to pricey devices like the Pixel phones. However, Google is addressing this concern with the new Pixel 8 and 8 Pro models. The company has committed to providing spare parts for these phones for an extended period of seven years. A company representative confirmed this to Android Authority.

“Parts will be available for seven years. That’s part of our commitment as we go to the seven years (sic) that we need to make our parts available so you can keep your hardware alive for that long,” Soniya Jobanputra, director of product management at Google, told the news website.

Google’s move to stock Pixel 8 spare parts for seven years will now enable Pixel users to keep their Pixel 8 phones running for longer without having to buy a new one, according to the company.

In addition to stocking spare parts for seven years, Google will also offer seven years of software updates for the Pixel 8 series. This means that users will continue to receive security updates and new features for their Pixel 8 phones for many years to come.

The announcement comes at a time when right-to-repair laws are gaining traction around the world. In the United States, California is on the verge of passing a law that would require manufacturers to make spare parts available for an extended period of time after a product is discontinued. It mandates three years for products priced between $50 to $99.99 and seven years for products priced at $100 or above.
