Ohio man dies in Lake Powell cliff jumping accident

BULLFROG BASIN, Kane County – An Ohio man died Thursday in a cliff jumping accident at Lake Powell.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office said the dispatch center received a report of a possible death 0.25 miles south of buoy 89 on Lake Powell at 11:43 a.m. Thursday. The incident happened in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, about 89 miles from Glen Canyon Dam.

Witnesses reported that a man jumped from a cliff about 50 feet high and did not resurface. Glen Canyon rangers, Kane County sheriff’s deputies and Utah Department of Natural Resources officers began searching for the man after he arrived at the scene.

At 10:20 a.m. Friday, the Utah Department of Public Safety dive team used sonar to locate the victim and divers recovered his body, which was found about 30 feet under water.

The man has been identified as Cory Ryan Ehrnschwender, 36, of Cincinnati. His body was taken to the Utah State Medical Examiner in Salt Lake City and the incident is being investigated.

A statement from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office reminded people recreating at Lake Powell that jumping or diving from rock cliffs, ledges or man-made structures (except ships) 15 feet or more above the water is prohibited.
