OLED is in iPad’s future as Apple mulls over display transition

The 5th generation iPad Air.

It is widely believed that Apple will launch a new iPad Pro early next year and that it will be the first major update to the iPad Pro since 2018.

Word on the street is that this new iPad Pro will feature Apple’s new M3 chip, an all-new Magic Keyboard, and, perhaps most crucially, a larger OLED display.

According to research firm Omdia, the switch to OLED is important because Apple is said to be watching how the market responds to this new iPad Pro before deciding if it should transition its iPad lineup to all OLED displays.

It also said that if the switch is well-received, Apple could introduce OLED displays to the iPad Air as well as the iPad mini. That said, don’t expect these tablets to arrive any time soon. Omdia believes they would only arrive in 2026.

Apple’s impending switch to OLED is also curious because the larger 12.9-inch iPad Pro currently has a mini-LED display, which, apart from minor blooming issues, is excellent.

One would have thought that Apple would try to bring this display technology to the rest of its iPads, as opposed to switching to OLED displays.

That said, OLED technology has improved vastly over the past couple of years, and their ubiquity (they are used widely in smartphones) ostensibly makes them easier to source and procure.
