Police swarm Kennedy Middle School in Germantown, witnesses report hearing gunfire

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to Kennedy Middle School in Germantown Monday night for what the district called a “school safety threat.”The school is located near Fond du Lac Avenue and Crusader Court.Police scanner audio referenced a person on the school’s roof, then a report of shots fired. Investigators did not immediately confirm a shooting. It’s not clear if anyone was hit or injured. The Germantown School District sent the following email to families Monday night:”Dear Families, Due to a school safety threat at Kennedy Middle School this evening, a lockdown was enforced. Germantown Police Department are at KMS presently. All students that were at KMS are being transported to MacArthur Elementary via Riteway buses. Parents/guardians, please come to MacArthur Elementary to pick up your child(ren). Bring your ID for pickup. There will be further instructions as you arrive. We will provide more updates as soon as we are able.” Just before 11:30 p.m., a second email was sent to families from the district.”Dear Families, This message is to inform you that there will be no school for Germantown School District tomorrow, Tuesday, October 24th. Germantown High School coaches and advisors will reach out to their teams in the morning regarding practices and games; off-campus post-season competitions will continue at this time. We are continuing to work closely with the Germantown Police Department concerning the incident this evening at Kennedy Middle School. All students, families, and staff that were in the building are safe, accounted for, and have been reunited with their families and loved ones. We will communicate more information tomorrow, October 24th, as we work with the Germantown Police Department.”12 News witnessed parents and students reuniting at the school.Samantha Scherdin, a 7th grader, said she was inside the school for dance practice when the building went on lockdown.”A lot was happening,” Scherdin said. “Me and my friends were just all together and hugging and crying. But we were told we had to be quiet so nothing would come into the building. But we were told no one was in the building. Just stuff going around and we heard gunshots and yelling.”During a livestreamed Germantown School Board meeting, a board member interrupted to say, “We have an incident that is occurring over at Kennedy Middle School now with police presence.”The meeting, which was not being held at Kennedy Middle School, was then paused and put on a lockdown. The meeting was then ended early.12 News has multiple requests to law enforcement and the school district to get information about what happened. As of late Monday night, no official information had been released.
