Premier League team news, injury latest, fixtures, referees – matchweek six

The Premier League is back in action following the midweek European fixtures.

Matchweek six has some exciting fixtures, with the pick of the games taking place on Sunday when Tottenham Hotspur travel to Arsenal for the north London derby. Manchester United travel to Burnley on Saturday, while Manchester City host Nottingham Forest.

The Athletic brings you all the latest team news going into this weekend’s games.

Crystal Palace vs Fulham

Saturday, September 23 (3PM BST)

Crystal Palace team news: Michael Olise will miss the match after suffering a setback during his recovery from the hamstring injury that he sustained in June. Matheus Franca and Jefferson Lerma are set to continue to miss out while James Tompkins, Marc Guehi and Jordan Ayew are doubts.

Fulham team news: Midfielder Sasa Lukic is still out, so too is centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo and winger Adama Traore. Antonee Robinson has returned to training and should be ready.

Referee: Paul Tierney (Stuart Attwell VAR)

Opta omen: Following a run of three straight Premier League victories against Fulham between 2018 and 2020, Crystal Palace are now winless in their last three against the Cottagers (D2 L1).

Luton Town vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

Saturday, September 23 (3PM BST)

Luton team news: Dan Potts, Jordan Clark, and Gabriel Osho all remain unavailable as they recover from long-term injuries. Ross Barkley is a doubt for the game as he recovers from the hamstring strain that made him miss the 1-0 defeat to Fulham last weekend.

Wolves team news: Rayan Ait Nouri (muscle fatigue) is a doubt for the game as is Joe Hodge. Wolves manager Gary O’Neill confirmed on September 16 that Hodge is “back on the grass running and should be back with the group at some point next week.”

Referee: Josh Smith (John Brooks VAR)

Opta omen: This is the first top–flight meeting between Luton and Wolves since the 1983–84 campaign, with the Hatters winning home (4–0) and away (2–1) games against Wolves that season.

Manchester City vs Nottingham Forest

Manchester City team news: Long-term absentee Kevin De Bruyne is still recovering from the hamstring injury that he sustained during the opening-day victory over Burnley. Guardiola will be expected to give updates on Jack Grealish (thigh), Mateo Kovacic (lower back), and John Stones (thigh) during Friday’s press conference. Guardiola confirmed earlier this week that Bernardo Silva is set to miss the “next few games” after an injury forced him off during the midweek Champions League victory at the Etihad.

Nottingham Forest team news: Serge Aurier was substituted with an injury issue during the 1-0 victory over Chelsea on September 2 but is closing in on a return. Willy Boly is “back with the group” after missing the draw at the City Ground on Monday with a fever. Wayne Hennessey returned to training at the end of August after recovering from a knee injury. Danilo will miss the game with a thigh injury that he sustained during the victory over Chelsea with Steve Cooper confirming on Thursday that he remains out “for a few weeks”.

Referee: Anthony Taylor (Michael Salisbury VAR)

Opta omen: Manchester City are unbeaten in six league games against Nottingham Forest (W4 D2) since a 3–2 home defeat in the second tier in December 1997.

Brentford vs Everton

Saturday, September 23 (5.30PM BST)

Brentford team news: Ivan Toney returned to training earlier this week but still has four months left of his suspension due to betting offences remaining. Josh Dasilva and Shandon Baptiste are both long-term absentees. Ben Mee, Kristoffer Ajer and Mikkel Damsgaard are doubts. Brentford confirmed this week that Rico Henry is likely to miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a significant knee injury during his side’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United last weekend.

Everton team news: Dele Alli will miss the game through injury as well as Seamus Coleman who is still recovering from the knee injury that he sustained last season. Despite returning to training, Jack Harrison will not feature against Brentford with Sean Dyche saying: “He is just back on the grass. He has had quite a long-term situation and he is going very well I must say. He is very clear-minded. His fitness looks good but no, he is not ready to go yet.” Andre Gomes is also close to returning.

Opta omen: Two of the three teams to attempt the most long passes in the Premier League this season have been Everton (287, second) and Brentford (285, third). Since the start of the 2021–22 campaign, Brentford lead the way for long passes (4,932) while Everton have attempted the most since Sean Dyche’s first game in charge in February (1,369).

Burnley vs Manchester United

Saturday, September 23 (8PM BST)

Burnley team news: Hjalmar Ekdal and Michael Obafemi are out with injuries, while Darko Churnilov is a long-term absentee. Lyle Foster is suspended following his red card against Nottingham Forest.

Manchester United team news: Luke Shaw, Amad, Tom Heaton and Tyrell Malacia are out. Antony remains in Brazil “until further notice”. Jadon Sancho is out of contention after being moved away from first-team training. Raphael Varane and Mason Mount have returned to training. Sofyan Amrabat, Kobbie Mainoo, and Harry Maguire are doubts.

Opta omen: Having lost their first ever Premier League visit to Turf Moor 1–0 in August 2009, Manchester United are unbeaten in their last seven away against Burnley (W5 D2), conceding just one further goal in this run.

Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur

Arsenal team news: Jurrien Timber is a long-term absentee after suffering a serious knee injury on the opening day of the season. Mohammed Elneny has returned to training after recovering from a knee injury. Thomas Partey is still unavailable as he recovers from a groin injury. Gabriel Martinelli is a doubt after a tight hamstring forced him off during the 1-0 victory over Everton last weekend.

Tottenham team news: Ivan Perisic will miss the north London derby and the majority of the season after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury during training this week. Rodrigo Bentancur is still recovering from the ruptured ACL injury that he sustained in February. Ryan Sessegnon and Bryan Gil will both miss the game with muscle injuries. Giovanni Lo Celso returned to training this week following a thigh injury.

Referee: Rob Jones (Paul Tierney VAR)

Opta omen: This is the first league meeting between Arsenal and Tottenham with both sides still unbeaten coming into the match since September 1990, when the pair drew 0–0 at Highbury in the third game of the season. In the Premier League, it’s the sixth time Arsenal have faced Spurs while still unbeaten (W2 D3), while it’s the fifth time Spurs have faced the Gunners without having lost (D1 L3).

Brighton vs Bournemouth

Sunday, September 24 (2PM BST)

Brighton team news: Julio Enciso is out with a knee injury as is Jakub Moder. Lewis Dunk missed out during Thursday’s Europa League defeat after picking up an injury against Manchester United on Saturday, while Evan Ferguson was also not included in the squad.

Bournemouth team news: Alex Scott remains unavailable as do Emiliano Marcondes and Ryan Fredericks. Tyler Adams is nearing a return but remains a doubt for the trip to the Amex.

Opta omen: After a 10–game winless run in the league against Bournemouth between 2010 and 2019 (D4 L6), Brighton have now won three of their last four against the Cherries (L1).

Chelsea vs Aston Villa

Chelsea team news: Wesley Fofana (knee), Christopher Nkunku (knee), Romeo Lavia (ankle), Carney Chukwuemeka (knee), Armando Broja (knee), Marcus Bettinelli (knee) and Reece James (thigh) are all set to miss out. Trevor Chalobah (thigh), Benoit Badiashile (thigh), Marc Cucurella, Moises Caicedo (knee), and Noni Madueke are doubts.

Aston Villa team news: Emi Buendia and Tyrone Mings are unavailable as they recovers from the ACL injury they sustained in August. Diego Carlos and Timothy Iroegbunam are both expected to miss out. Bertrand Traore is a doubt. Jacob Ramsey made his return from the bench during Thursday’s Europa League defeat.

Opta omen: After having won six of their first eight away Premier League games under Unai Emery (D1 L1), Aston Villa have now won just one of their last seven on the road (D2 L4). However, the Villans are so far unbeaten in London under Emery in the league (W2 D2).

Liverpool team news: Thiago Alcantara is yet to feature this season while Virgil van Dijk will miss the game through suspension after being sent off during the 2-1 victory over Newcastle United on August 27. Trent Alexander-Arnold is hoping to return in time for the game on Sunday after missing last weekend’s win over Wolves.

West Ham team news: No injury doubts. David Moyes’ side have injury doubt ahead of the trip to Anfield.

Newcastle team news: Joe Willock and Emil Krafth will miss the game. Joelinton has missed Newcastle’s last two games with a knee injury, including the stalemate against AC Milan in the San Siro on Tuesday.
