Shane MacGowan in hospital: ‘We’re hoping he is well enough to be home by Christmas,’ says wife Victoria

She said the 65-year-old singer had lost a lot of weight and staff were “working hard” to have him home for Christmas.

Asked when he might be healthy enough for release, Clarke said: “The timeline keeps changing. It depends on him being able to get his strength up.”

Speaking to the Sunday Independent this weekend, Clarke said: “It’s very difficult if somebody is immobile for any length of time, as Shane was before he went into hospital. It means you are prone to things like pneumonia and bed sores, which lower immunity and make you weaker.

‘Shane probably had more visitors in hospital than he would have at home’

“Shane has other complications which make it difficult for him to do the exercises he needs to do.

“He is also not a great eater, so it’s quite hard for him to get the required calories and protein he needs to build himself up. He does tend to lose a lot of weight —and he didn’t exactly have a lot to lose to begin with.”

Asked if MacGowan had fears about his mortality, she said: “Of course he’s afraid, and he’s good at talking about it — but he’s always good at being Zen about it.

Clarke said the singer shares the same fears “as everyone else”.

“That’s the thing we all discover — that we are actually all afraid of the same things. We are afraid to lose each other, and we are afraid to lose our lives because we don’t know what is next.”

Shane has had his “ups and downs”, she said, but is buoyed by friends coming to see him.

In the past few weeks, Bono and The Edge, Moya Brennan, Damien Dempsey, Daniel O’Donnell, Imelda Mae, Mundy and Bobby Gillespie had all paid a visit to his sick bed.

“He probably has had more visitors since he’s been in hospital than he would have at home.”

Clarke, who married MacGowan in 2018, also spoke about what it is like to now be her husband’s carer.

‘We take it day by day and do whatever we can to stay positive’

“It means life has changed and it’s curtailed in lots of ways. Things you might have taken for granted — like going on holidays or even going to a movie or going anywhere — that becomes very difficult.”

However, she is quick to dismiss the idea that the singer is lucky to have her by his side.

“It’s a two-way thing. I feel lucky to have found him. He has always inspired me. He is such a beautiful, bright, funny, intelligent, interesting person. I feel like I’m never going to get bored with him. There is always something that surprises me about Shane.

“We take it day by day and do whatever we can to stay positive.”

Clarke was speaking as she prepared to host a ‘Positive Nights’ talk on October 5 at The Queens pub in Dalkey. In the talk, she will explain how ‘angels’ have helped her through difficult times.

“It’s all about the energy. When you get into a stressful situation and people are sick around you, it’s natural that your energy is going to drop. But if you decide to tune into a higher energy, I think you can do it.

“I know it sounds cheesy but I focus on gratitude and appreciation and love. We have met the most amazing angels in human form in hospital. Sometimes all it takes is a smile and then you smile at the next person you meet, you work up a higher vibration and you keep it going.”
