Should NBA referees wear Google glass?

This is not very likely to happen — the league wouldn’t let Victor Oladipo wear Google Glass to the NBA Draft, so they’re not about to let them wear it in games.

But should they — wear glasses that record and upload what they see so we can see, so the league office can see the game from their perspective?

It’s an interesting idea and it has at least one name front office guy intrigued: Darryl Morey of the Rockets. During a recent Reddit AMA he said: “This is a great idea! Ask Adam Silver” (referring to the guy taking over for David Stern next February). Was he serious, he was asked that and followed up on twitter.

Before you say it can’t be done, the WNBA tried out a ref cam as has the MLS, and the NFL has toyed with an “ump cam,” although because those officials wear hats it solves a couple logistical issues. The WNBA ref had to wear a battery vest (so like wearing a weight to the workout) and a kind of awkward mask/headband.

But with Google glass the technology gets better so….

Don’t bet on it. But if the NBA wanted some transparency, show a close block/charge call real time from the ref’s viewpoint. Considering how big and fast the players are in the NBA, that the refs are as accurate as they are is pretty amazing.
