Son Heung-min to return to Tottenham on Thursday following South Korea’s Asian Cup exit

Son Heung-min is due to return to Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday following South Korea’s exit from the Asian Cup.

Son, 31, has missed Spurs’ last five matches in all competitions having previously started all 20 of the club’s Premier League games this season.

He is their top scorer with 12 goals and has added five assists.

Son’s return to his club puts him in line to feature for Ange Postecoglou’s side against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

South Korea were hoping to win a first Asian Cup since 1960 but a faltering campaign under Jurgen Klinsmann was finally ended at the semi-final stage by Jordan on Tuesday.

“It is very disappointing. I am devastated about this result,” Son said after the game.

“(The Asian Cup) was very very difficult. I have no regrets. I gave everything to be honest. It is a really tough competition. The level of Asian football is always going higher. There was always going to be tough. Today was a tough challenge. Now I have to go back to my club and be ready for the rest of the season.”

Tottenham have won two of the five games without their club captain but went out of the FA Cup at the hands of Manchester City last month.

They currently sit fifth in the Premier League table, two points off fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Midfielder Yves Bissouma, who had been away on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Mali, returned to the club on Wednesday and is being assessed, as is customary for players returning.
