SPRINGFIELD & CENTRAL ILLINOIS FORECAST

CHANGES ON THE WAY FOR THE WEEKEND

FRIDAY: Increasing clouds by the evening hours with temperatures staying mild. High: 59 Low: 42

SATURDAY: Scattered rain showers with steadier rain late morning into the afternoon. Much cooler. High: 48 Low: 39

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy and cool. High: 47

MONDAY: A big cool down for the start of the work week. Brisk winds. Mostly sunny. High: 36

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny skies with near-average temperatures. High: 39

Happy Friday! After a long dry spell, rain will be making a comeback across central Illinois. A low pressure system spinning out from the Southern Plains will merge with another low pressure system diving through the Upper Midwest to help funnel moisture into Illinois and generate rainy conditions. Through Friday evening, look for increasing clouds with some scattered rain showers developing after midnight and lows around 42.

For Saturday, the weekend gets off to a wet start with more scattered showers…possibly around a half inch of rain by the time the rain tapers off and ends Saturday evening. And our mild stretch of weather will come to an end as temperatures will not be as warm as it’s been as temperatures climb to around 48. Then for Sunday, we’ll be drying out but still holding on to the clouds, especially in the morning, along with highs in the mid 40s.

Looking ahead, chilly weather settles over central Illinois early next week with highs only in the upper 30s to around 40 on Monday and Tuesday along with mostly sunny skies. But the cool down does not last long, and temperatures are on the rebound by midweek with highs in the mid to upper 40s on Wednesday and pushing close to 50 on Thursday. Also look for more dry weather into the middle of the week with partly to mostly cloudy skies Wednesday and Thursday.

CHAMPAIGN-EAST CENTRAL ILLINOIS FORECAST

RAINY AND MILD FOR SATURDAY, COLD AIR BULLIES ITS WAY IN ON MONDAY

FRIDAY NIGHT: Rain moves into the region. Low: 42

SATURDAY: Steady showers are expected throughout the day. High: 45

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy with little change to our temperatures. High: 44

MONDAY: A big push of cold air. Highs barely above freezing. High: 33

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny skies with near-average temperatures. High: 38

We ended the work week with temperatures in the upper 50s and we managed 60 degrees for our high temp in Springfield. That marks two 60-degree days for December. It has been very mild with much of the month featuring above-average temperatures. We’ve got some wet weather and some cold weather returning, but that looks to be short-lived.

Our Next Weather Maker is pushing into western Missouri as of 6 PM Friday. I’m expecting the rain to start for us in the early morning hours of Saturday. We’re projecting all day, steady rainfall with some pretty good accumulation. I’ve bumped up our projections from what I had on Thursday. Now I like most of the region to see 0.50-1″ of rainfall. Showers should start to exit our area closer to Midnight Saturday and we’ll be dry on Sunday.

The clouds stick around for our weekend with little change in our temperatures. We’ll be in the mid-40s for the weekend which still puts us above-average for mid-December. The colder air will find us early next week. High temps on Monday will struggle to reach above freezing and we’ll be closer to 40 degrees by Tuesday.

We don’t stay down for long as the warmer air returns for the middle and end of the week. Temperatures will be back into the 50s by Thursday and Friday. We could also see another round of rain heading towards the weekend before Christmas. Stay tuned for details!
