Voters in Jackson County have rejected a 40-year extension of a 3/8th-cent sales tax. The extension would have helped fund a new downtown stadium for the Kansas City Royals and maintain and repair Arrowhead Stadium. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, voters rejected Question 1 by a margin of 58-42 percent. Over 78,000 voters said no. The Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs conceded defeat. “We respect the voters of Jackson County and the results of the election today,” Royals Chairman and CEO John Sherman said in a statement. “We will take some time to reflect on and process the outcome and find a path forward that works out for the Royals and our fans.” Chiefs president Mark Donovan also spoke at the watch party for the yes campaign. “We respect the process and the decision of the Jackson County voters today,” Donovan said. “We’re disappointed. We feel we put forth the best offer for Jackson County…we’re ready to extend the long standing partnership with the teams the enjoyed with this county.
