Suspect arrested after UNC-Chapel Hill gives ‘all-clear’ in relation to campus safety alert

UNC-Chapel Hill has issued an “all-clear” after first alerting students and staff of a campus safety alert about an “armed and dangerous person on or near campus.”UNC officials issued the campus safety alert Wednesday around 12:54 p.m. Campus went into lockdown at 1:15 p.m., with University police advising all students, faculty and staff at the time to shelter in place. According to WRAL, police were told to be on the lookout for a suspect possibly involved in an incident at Alpine Bagel at the UNC Student Union. A person was seen with a firearm near that location. WRAL reports, the person entered the café and waved a gun before leaving. No shots were fired. University sirens were sounded as students were seen evacuating earlier Wednesday afternoon. Police were also seen along campus near the student union near the intersection of Stadium Drive and South Road. The suspect, Mickel Deonte Harris, 27, was arrested around 2:45 p.m. and is in police custody. Charges are pending.
