A Boston police officer is recovering after he was shot Monday night in the city’s Dorchester neighborhood, authorities said.Boston police Commissioner Michael Cox said that shortly before 9:35 p.m., the Boston Police Department received a 911 call about a person armed with a gun near the intersection of Esmond and Bradshaw streets.Cox said that as officers approached the suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Avery Lewis, of Dorchester, he fired a round at them. That gunshot struck one officer in the chest, but Cox confirmed that the officer was wearing a bulletproof vest. With all the firearms that we have out here, we’re doing all that we can to remove them. But more importantly, officers showed tremendous restraint,” Cox said. “They follow their training, protecting the citizens of Boston. We’re highly, highly proud of them and the work that they do on a daily basis.”The injured officer, who Cox said has been with the department for about two years, was taken to Boston Medical Center to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries and later released. “We are very fortunate tonight that our officer is going to be fine, at least physically,” Cox said. “We want to certainly thank him for his service and thank all the other officers that responded to make sure that we caught the suspect involved with the incident.”Boston Mayor Michelle Wu was among several officials who spoke with the officer at the hospital.”Very thankfully that he’s here, he’s going to be just fine and we were able to talk to him,” Wu said.Cox and Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said Lewis is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Dorchester District Court.Lewis will be charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawful possession of a large capacity feeding device, armed assault to murder, assault and battery with a firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, assault and battery on a police officer, possession of a firearm in commission of a felony, trafficking of cocaine, 36 grams or more, less than 100 grams and resisting arrest.
