Tanker truck driver dies in fiery crash in Summit County, sheriff’s office says

MACEDONIA, Ohio – A tanker truck driver died in a fiery crash Saturday morning in Summit County, according to the sheriff’s office.

The truck driver has not yet been publicly identified in the crash that happened about 9:15 a.m. at the ramp from State Route 8 to northbound Interstate 271 in Northfield Center Township, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The tanker truck was driving north on Rt. 8 and tried to get on I-271 when the truck lost control, went over the bridge, landed on the northbound lanes of Rt. 8 and burst into flames, the release says. The sheriff’s office and Macedonia police responded to the crash.

Several fire departments including Macedonia and Twinsburg, as well as the Summit County HAZMAT team, responded to the scene. The tanker truck driver died from injuries suffered in the crash, according to the release.

The area had been closed off so officials could inspect the bridge for safety, but has since been re-opened. The crash is under investigation.
