US defense secretary Lloyd Austin makes unannounced visit to Ukraine

US defense secretary Lloyd Austin visits Kyiv to support Ukraine amidst stretched US resources due to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Ukraine still requires more military aid despite receiving over $44 billion from the US and $35 billion from other allies. The Pentagon has limited funds left in this year’s budget to send weapons to Ukraine. Congress has not passed a new budget or supplemental spending package, delaying additional aid. Senate Republicans oppose providing more Ukraine aid without unrelated provisions. Winter conditions will make it difficult for either side to make significant gains in the conflict.
