Teyana Taylor confirms ‘heartbreaking’ divorce from Iman Shumpert as she asks for ‘privacy’ in order to ‘protect’ their two daughters

Teyana Taylor confirmed the news of her divorce with husband Iman Shumpert after 7 years of marriage. 

The 32-year-old singer took to her Instagram Stories on Friday to share her feelings on the divorce proceedings and her reaction after TMZ reported she had quietly filed divorce documents this past January on Wednesday.

After admitting she is a very ‘private’ person, Teyana insisted she had held off on commenting about the divorce as a way of ‘protecting’ her family.

The ‘Wake Up Love’ hitmaker –who shares two daughters, Iman ‘Junie’ Tayla, 7, and Rue Rose, 3, with the NBA star —  also called the situation ‘heartbreaking’.

She concluded by asking for privacy for her family to ‘resolve this matter in peace’.

The statement, in full, reads: ‘I mind my business, don’t bother nobody & y’all know I’ve never played about my children, family & our privacy. I have not spoken on this private matter to any media outlets or blogs etc.

‘So everyone claiming ‘Teyana said’ didn’t get any statements directly from ME. These statements were taken from private court documents that were leaked to the public. It is very heartbreaking that someone would take out the time to make such a private matter public for the world to see.

‘However, protecting my family is one thing I’ve ALWAYS done & for my children I will continue to do so. Please if y’all love y’all play nieces Junie & Rue like y’all have shown, please allow my self & my family some privacy to resolve this matter in peace, Love y’all.’

The Harlem, New York native, who filed the divorce docs in January, announced her separation from Shumpert this past September.

In the legal docs, the White Men Can’t Jump actress said that the relationship was doomed by Shumpert’s insecurity about their respective levels of fame and whether he was ‘good enough for her.’

Taylor in court docs accused Shumpert of ‘treating her cruelly and displaying extreme narcissistic behavior throughout the majority of their marriage.’

She said Shumpert ‘became more and more angry’ with her fame, and would grill her about it and provoke arguments via text messages, later saying he was sorry, in a toxic and repeating cycle.

Taylor said that by 2022, the relationship had deteriorated to the point that she filed for divorce, then asked her lawyers to withdraw her filing the next day. She told the court she was ‘unable to handle the emotional rollercoaster’ by the time 2023 rolled around and decided to move forward with the divorce.

In confirming their separation in September after seven years of marriage, Taylor said that infidelity was not the cause of the break-up, but took a different tack in her divorce court papers, saying that Shumpert had cheated on her.

Iman’s lawyer, Stephen C. Steele told TMZ on Thursday: ‘Mr. Shumpert hopes parties and counsel can work toward a fair resolution, keeping the best interests of the children of paramount concern.’

In April, Taylor denied rumors that circulated on TikTok that she had a drug overdose after learning Shumpert had been unfaithful to her.

Taylor and Shumpert initially met in 2011 at a party before getting involved romantically in 2014. They got engaged in 2015 – the same year they welcomed daughter Junie – and exchanged vows in late 2016.
