It was one of the most memorable and impactful 10-ball knocks in history, with David finishing unbeaten on 31 runs.

Although David wasted little time in scoring runs once he strode out to the crease following Josh Inglis’ dismissal for 20 at the end of the 17th over, it was the last three deliveries which stunned the crowd in Wellington.

Southee started the final over with a wide before David and Marsh traded singles and leg-byes until the former ended up on strike for the fifth ball.

It then became the David show, smashing a six that landed on the boundary blocks.

David followed it up with a rapid two as he and Marsh sprinted between the wickets like their life depended on it.

It left David — and Australia — requiring four runs for victory with only one ball remaining.

And hit the four runs required he did as the ball just evaded the sprawling efforts of New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips on the boundary.

It was heartbreak for New Zealand but for the Australian team, it was elation.

David’s last-ball heroics also sparked a wave of astonishment on social media.
