Disruption compounded due to strikes and overtime ban

All rail operators are working to an overtime ban between Friday December 1 – 9, which may also add to disruption. Rolling strikes are also taking place across the week, but these will not affect the North East today as the operators, C2C and Greater Anglia, do not operate any services in the region.

Service disrupted until 11am

According to National Rail, major disruption between Newcastle and Edinburgh is expected until 11am.

Ticket acceptance for Lumo services

Ticket acceptance is in place for Lumo services on Northern (Carlisle – Newcastle) and Avanti West Coast (London Euston – Edinburgh)

Low-cost operator Lumo only uses the East Coast mainline, so its services are also disrupted

Customers who do not travel ‘entitled to full refund’

LNER says tickets do not need to be amended or altered, but advises making a new seat reservation. Customers who do not travel on either date are entitled to a full refund.

Flooding on the railways

The Met Office issued a Yellow weather warning for rain at midday on Monday, December 4, which remains in place until 9am today, Tuesday December 5. This rain has caused rough conditions on the roads – but the impact is really being felt on the railways.

Major disruption is expected between Newcastle and Edinburgh until 10am.

The railway route north from Newcastle to Edinburgh Is blocked due to heavy rain and flooding.

Queues picking up

The usual rush-hour traffic is making things tricky on the roads – take care!

  • This includes:
  • Queues on the A1 Western Bypass in both directions. Traffic is taking around 20 minutes.
  • Queues on the A19 northbound at Jarrow, from Leam Lane towards the Tyne Tunnel.
  • And slow traffic southbound at the Tyne Tunnel too – travel taking about 10 minutes.
  • Queues at the Moor Farm Roundabout in south east Northumberland.
  • Queues from Swalwell football club northbound on the A694 Derwenthaugh Road.
  • Slow traffic on the A1058 and A69 heading into Newcastle on either side of the city.
  • Slow traffic on the Redheugh Bridge, and also Leam Lane and the Felling Bypass.
  • Queues on Leazes Road and Newcastle Road in Durham.

and

  • There appears to be a broken down vehicle on the A177 in Bowburn. But traffic there is coping well.

Rail delays and cancellations

Plenty to watch out for if you were supposed to be travelling this morning.

All lanes reopen on the A19

The flooding issue has been resolved on the A19 in County Durham.

There are some delays and 30 minute gaps on the Metro this morning.
