The 40-car freight train derailment sent more than a dozen cars off the tracks in Flourtown around 5 a.m. Homes were evacuated in the Whitemarsh Township area as a precaution.Numerous containers were strewn around the site and a white substance leaked from one tanker car. Police said in a Facebook post that the substance was “silicone pellets which pose no risk to the community.”At a Monday morning news conference, Barren Hill Fire Department Chief Christopher Schwartz said no hazardous materials leaked.The train was carrying the following:Tetrachloroethylene: A nonflammable colorless liquid used as a dry cleaning and degreasing agent.Urea: Crop fertilizer.Polyethylene pellets: Plastic pellets.Trash.Several roads near the scene were shut down.Norfolk Southern owns the tracks where the crash occurred. The train was being operated by CSX. Norfolk Southern and CSX teams were on the scene as well as the Montgomery County’s Department of Public Safety Response Team. NTSB has been notified and will investigate the cause.No one was injured.Norfolk Southern — and the entire rail industry — has been under intense scrutiny since one of its trains derailed and caught fire in February in Ohio, creating towering black smoke, forcing evacuations and raising environmental worries.
