2008 NBA Champion Kevin Garnett predicts that Jeremy Sochan, Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs will make the playoffs this season.
Based on Victor Wembanyama’s impressive preseason play, two NBA Hall-of-Famers said the hype surrounding rookie is real and that the Spurs are once again playoff contenders.
The comments came Friday during an episode of Kevin Garnett’s KG Certified podcast. During the show, Garnett and former teammate and 2008 Finals MVP Paul Pierce laid out lofty goals for Wembanyama and the Spurs this season.
“Right now, today, [Victor Wembanyama] is one of the top-five skill players in the NBA,” Pierce said. “In the small sample, he has shown me the handle. He’s shown me the stepback. He has shown me the lob, the pick-and-roll and the pick-and-pop threat. He can get the ball in traffic and drunk over everybody.”
Indeed, the No. 1 draft pick had another strong showing in Friday’s preseason matchup against the Golden State Warriors. Wembanyama racked up an impressive 19 points, five blocks and four rebounds to lead the Silver and Black to a 122-117 win over Steph Curry and the Warriors.
Sochan’s 11 rebounds and strong performances from Devin Vassell and Zach Collins — who signed a two-year $35 million extension with the Spurs over the weekend — also helped seize that victory.
The strength of the players surrounding Wemby led Garnett to speculate that the Silver and Black “should make the playoffs.” That prediction is music to the ears of Spurs’ fans, who haven’t enjoyed a playoff appearance since 2020.
However, the two NBA legends aren’t the only ones with Wemby fever ahead of the Spurs’ Wednesday home opener against the Dallas Mavericks.
The cost of attending a Spurs game this season has increased 75% on average compared to last year, according to VividSeats, which bases its tabulations on an average of box office and resale ticket prices. At press time, the average price for the Spurs’ home opener tracked at $153, according to VividSeats.
