Watch: Raccoon ruins proposal

It’s hard to forget your marriage proposal, but one South Carolina couple’s special moment has gone viral, all thanks to their friend, who was distracted while filming. It happened in Nathan Demetri’s backyard in Columbia — a surprise proposal to his then-girlfriend, Kate Jones. But an even bigger surprise was what wasn’t on the proposal video shot by one of Kate’s best friends. “She got everything except for the kneeling part,” Jones said. At the moment when Demetri reached in his pocket for the ring, Mary Dawson got distracted by a rustling noise and turned her head, along with the phone, just in time to see a raccoon that had approached the area. By the type Dawson panned away from the raccoon, the “will you marry me?” part of the proposal was over. “She was very regretful, very nervous to tell us,” Jones said. Comments online saying things like, “I’d be taking new best friend applications” didn’t help. Jones said she and her new fiancé aren’t mad at Dawson and found the situation hilarious. Plus, Jones’ sister was there taking photos from the other side and caught the proposal on camera. If you string together the live photos, you can see the moment Demetri gets down on one knee to pop the question. “It would be a great story at the end of the day, so I’m glad it happened,” Demetri said.
