Power is returning in Northern California after hundreds of thousands of customers were plunged into darkness by powerful winds that moved across the region on Sunday. As of Monday at 6 a.m., 44,000 SMUD customers were still without power, mainly in the Arden-Arcade area and other northern parts of Sacramento County. SMUD’s outage map had crashed on Sunday afternoon as those impacted checked on the outages. A statewide dashboard indicated at one point that more than 142,000 SMUD customers were in the dark across Sacramento County.That same dashboard showed Monday morning that nearly 37,000 customers were without power in Placer County, 20,000 in Nevada County, 14,000 in Yuba County, 12,000 in Solano County, and more than 10,000 in San Joaquin and Sutter counties. Winds of more than 50 mph can cause power outages as well as limb and tree damage. Statewide, nearly 500,000 people remained in the dark early Monday, down from more than 680,000 on Sunday.
