Adobe unveils web version of Photoshop with AI-powered features

Adobe has officially introduced the web version of its renowned photo editing software, Adobe Photoshop. This new platform comes with the integration of AI capabilities, powered by Adobe’s recently unveiled AI model, Firefly. These AI features, known as Generative Fill and Generative Expand, promise to change the current workflows and save time by completing a few tasks on their own.

The beta version of Photoshop for the web was announced in October 2021. While it represented a more streamlined approach compared to its desktop counterpart, it lacked many of the sophisticated tools and features that users had come to love.

In a statement, Adobe said that it has made several changes to the beta version to provide a better user experience. For example, tools in the toolbar are grouped together based on workflows – such as retouching a portrait, selecting an object in your image, applying quick actions and more. Those who prefer the traditional interface will have the option to hide this toolbar.

The introduction of the web version of Photoshop means that creators don’t have to download or install the app separately. They can simply use the Photoshop tools online as well. Moreover, Adobe has made collaboration easier by allowing users to invite others to work together via a shared link, irrespective of whether they possess a Photoshop subscription or not.

Adobe’s AI capabilities

Adobe started integrating generative AI into its software tools with the recent rollout of its AI model – Firefly. The same has been added to Photoshop on the Web. Firefly’s introduction brings two interesting features to the table – Generative Fill and Generative Expand. These capabilities empower users to augment, extend, or remove content from their images while preserving perspective, lighting, and style. In essence, Photoshop now possesses the ability to intelligently edit images with remarkable precision.

This can also be done with text prompts in over 100 languages.

In addition to these AI-powered enhancements, the web version of Photoshop benefits from the Contextual Task Bar, a feature initially introduced to the desktop version in June this year. The Contextual Task Bar serves as an on-screen menu, intuitively suggesting the most relevant next steps, thereby streamlining the editing process and reducing the time and effort required to complete tasks.

Photoshop on the web is available as part of all Photoshop plans with a 7-day free trial. The initial version will not have all the features from the desktop but, Adobe has assured users that popular features like the patch tool, pen tool, smart object support, polygonal lasso, and more will be added in the near future.
