CHARLESTON — The Parkersburg News and Sentinel received five first-place awards in editorial and advertising in the West Virginia Press Association’s annual Better Newspapers Contest.

Steven Allen Adams, the newspaper’s Capitol reporter in Charleston, received a First Place in the Best Coverage of Breaking News category for a story about a congressman possibly breaking ethics rules.

Sportswriter Kerry Patrick won a First Place in the Best Sports News and Feature Reporting category. The News and Sentinel staff received First Place for a story about annual food drives in the Service to the Community category.

The News and Sentinel’s advertising department received two first-place awards for the Best Color Ad, Quarter Page or Less for an ad for Outdoor Fun and for the Boot Barn in the Best Single Black and White Ad.

Editorial wise, Adams also received second-place awards for a story about a natural gas plant in the Best Business, Economic or Labor Reporting category and second place for his Monday morning Reporter’s Notebook in the Best News Columnist Category. Adams covers legislative affairs, the governor’s office and state agencies in Charleston.

Online manager Art Smith received two second-place awards for “Ready to Run” in the Best Sports Columnist category and for photographs in the Best Photographer-Videographer category.

Terry Estep of the copy desk received second place in the Best Headline category. The copy desk received second place for the front page of Nov. 15, 2022, in the Best Front Page category.

Second place in the Best Editorial Page category was received by The News and Sentinel staff for the editorial pages of Oct. 28-Nov. 1.

The staff also received a second place in the Best Special Section category for the annual Progress edition.

Reporter Evan Bevins received third place for a story about a library book being questioned in the Best Governmental Affair Reporting category. The staff also won a third place in the Best Newspaper Design category.

The advertising department also received second places for Best Political Ad, Best Color Ad a Quarter Page or Less, Best Section — Sports for the “Pigskin Preview” and Best Classified Section. Advertising also received a third place in the Best Agency Advertisement for the Boot Barn.

The convention was held Aug. 11-12 in Charleston. The Hampshire Review received the Newspaper of the Year award.

In Division 3, The Wetzel Chronicle received third place. In Division 4, the The Doddridge Independent received first place.
