KDOT crews preparing roads for second winter storm, extreme cold

HOW SOON THEY LEAVE. COMING UP IN A FEW MINUTES. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU SIR. KDOT CREWS ARE BACK OUT ON THE ROAD TONIGHT GETTING READY FOR THAT NEXT WINTER STORM. KMBC NINE’S PEYTON HEADLEE IS LIVE TONIGHT WITH A LOOK AT THE ROAD CONDITIONS. PEYTON. YEAH, WE ARE ON I-35 SOUTH IN OVERLAND PARK, AND SO FAR SO GOOD. THE ROADS ARE LOOKING JUST FINE. I’LL FLIP THE CAMERA AROUND SO YOU CAN SEE IT. THEY ARE PRETTY DRY RIGHT NOW. WE JUST GOT SOME SPRINKLES A SECOND AGO, BUT THAT APPEARS TO HAVE STOPPED. WE’RE TOLD KDOT CREWS CAME IN AT 8:00 TONIGHT AND THEY’LL BE WORKING OVERNIGHT AND INTO TOMORROW. SO IT’S BEEN A BUSY LAST FEW DAYS FOR CDOT CREWS PREPPING EQUIPMENT PRE-TREATING THE ROADS CLEARING THE SNOW. NOW GETTING READY FOR A SECOND ROUND KDOT CREWS THE PAST 24 HOURS HAVE ALSO BEEN IN SHOPS AROUND THE METRO, WORKING ON SNOWPLOWS, MAKING SURE THAT THEIR MAINTENANCE AND AND THEIR REFILLED. THIS TIME THERE’S LESS SNOW FALLING, BUT THE TEMPERATURE DROPPED. WELL, IT’S GOING TO BE REALLY COLD. IT’S NOT GOING TO BE SO COLD THAT IT MAKES THE MATERIALS INEFFECTIVE. DELANEY THELEN WITH CDOT SAYS EVEN WITH BELOW FREEZING TEMPS, THE MATERIALS THEY PUT ON THE ROADS SHOULD STILL WORK, INCLUDING WHAT’S LEFT OVER FROM THE LAST STORM. IN CERTAIN AREAS, PARTICULARLY RAMPS AND BRIDGES, KDOT IS APPLYING TREATMENT MATERIAL TO THE ROAD AND OTHER AREAS. THERE’S ENOUGH MATERIAL FROM THE LAST STORM SALT, BRINE, MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE AND SALT THAT WILL PREPARE THE ROADS. STILL, THEY’RE ASKING DRIVERS TO SLOW DOWN AND BE WARY OF SLICK SPOTS. EVEN IF YOU HAVE GOOD ROAD CONDITIONS IN ONE AREA A FEW FEET OR A FEW MILES LATER, IT MIGHT BE VERY DIFFERENT. SO DRIVE WITH EXTRA CAUTION FOR THE CONDITIONS. THEIR CREWS WILL BE BACK ON THE ROADS OVERNIGHT, MAKING SURE THOSE CONDITIONS ARE SAFE AS LONG AS IT TAKES TO MAKE SURE THAT THE ROADS IN THE METRO ARE CLEAR. AND SHE PUT A HUGE EMPHASIS ON GIVING THOSE SNOWPLOW DRIVERS ROOM TO WORK, SHE SAID. IT MIGHT JUST LOOK LIKE ONE TRUCK IN ONE LANE, BUT IT COULD HAVE A BLADE EXTENDING OUT INTO THE NEXT LANE, SO BE SURE TO GIVE THEM SOME SPACE. LIVE IN OVERLAND PARK, PEYTON HEADLEE KMBC NINE NEWS. ALL RIGHT, PEYTON, THANK YOU. WE ARE ALSO WATCHING CONDITIONS ON THE MISSOURI SIDE. HERE’S A LIVE LOOK FROM 71 HIGHWAY AT 19TH STREET NEAR DOWNTOWN. MODOT SAYS THEIR BIGGEST CONCERN IS ICE. CREWS WILL CLEAR ANY PRECIPITATION AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE TO PREVENT HIGHWAYS FROM FREEZING OVER. AND LIKE KDOT, THEY ASKED DRIVERS TO BE PATIENT. WE’RE GOING TO DO A GROUP PLOW, SO WE’RE GOING TO HAVE 3 TO 5, UM, TRUCKS IN SYNCHRONIZATION, HEADING DOWN THE ROAD. UM, THAT DOES SLOW TRAFFIC DOWN BEHIND YOU. PEOPLE GET A LITTLE FRUSTRATED. BUT WHAT IT DOES DO IS ALLOW US TO CLEAR IT IN ONE PASS. WE WANT TO SHARE THESE NUMBERS WITH YOU AGAIN. IF YOU FIND YOURSELF NEEDING HELP ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, YOU CAN CALL STAR FIVE FIVE IN MISSOURI AND STAR FOUR SEVEN IN KANSAS. AND WE’LL BE ON AIR EARLY TOMORROW MORNING TO HELP PREPARE YOU FOR THE DRIVE TO WORK, JOIN US FOR FIRST NEWS STARTING AT FOUR. OUR TEAM WILL KEEP Y

KDOT crews preparing roads for second winter storm and extreme cold

An official with KDOT said even with below freezing temperatures, the materials crews put on the roads should still work — including what’s left over from the last storm.

KDOT crews are back out on the roads Thursday night getting ready for another winter storm set to hit the metro. “KDOT crews in the past 24 hours have also been in shops around the metro, working on snowplows, making sure that they’re maintained and they’re refilled,” Delaney Tholen, KC metro public affairs manager, said. Compared to the storm earlier in the week, less snow is expected to fall but the temperature will drop significantly this time around. Tholen said even with below-freezing temperatures, the materials crews put on the roads should still work — including what’s left over from the last storm. “Well, it’s going to be really cold. It’s not going to be so cold that it makes the materials ineffective,” she said. “In certain areas, particularly ramps and bridges, KDOT is applying treatment material to the road and other areas. There are enough materials from the last storm, salt brine and magnesium chloride, that will prepare the roads.”Still, they’re asking drivers to slow down and be weary of slick spots. “Even if you have good road conditions in one area, a few feet or a few miles later, it might be very different. So, drive with extra caution for the conditions,” she said.KDOT crews reported at 8 p.m. on Thursday evening. Tholen said they’ll work as long as it takes to make sure the roads in the metro are clear. Tholen also emphasized the importance of giving snowplow drivers room to work. “Do not try to pass the snowplows and give them room to work. Many snowplows out on KC metro highways, like the tow plow, which has a trailer pulled behind the truck with additional blades, have multiple blades deployed at once. This allows a single truck and operator to clear more than one lane at once and can be hazardous for vehicles traveling too closely,” she said.
