OnePlus launches new magic eraser-like AI feature: Here are the phones that will get the feature

OnePlus is finally bringing AI power to its smartphones. On Wednesday, the company introduced its new AI Eraser image editing feature for OnePlus smartphones. This feature, powered by the company’s Large Language Model (LLM), provides users with an AI powered tool which can help them remove unwanted objects from images, similar to Google’s AI-powered Magic Eraser.

OnePlus will be gradually rolling out its AI Eraser for flagship phones, OnePlus 12, 12R, 11, Open, and Nord CE 4 starting in April. According to OnePlus, its new AI feature will leverage the power of artificial intelligence and a series of advanced algorithms to allow users to edit images by selecting and removing any unwanted objects from the shots in the Photo Gallery.

OnePlus smartphone owners can use the OnePlus’ AI Eraser to remove objects like pedestrians, trash, or imperfections in the image. Once selected, the AI will analyse the selected area and will remove and automatically generate a replacement background that will blend into the surrounding environment of the photo while suiting the overall style of the image.

Detailing more about how the feature works, OnePlus reveals that their latest feature has undergone extensive research and development, backed by a significant investment from the company to ensure the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated content. Its proprietary LLM at the core of this feature has been rigorously trained on an extensive dataset, equipping it to handle complex situations. Leveraging this advanced visual understanding, the AI Eraser removes unwanted objects contextually fitting elements enhancing the photo’s aesthetic.

Notably, OnePlus’ sister company Oppo also offers a similar AI Eraser feature, which operates on the company’s proprietary LLM, AndesGPT. This feature uses generative AI to remove unwanted elements from photos. Oppo unveiled the feature at its ODC 2023 event and intends to introduce it to the Reno 11 series in the second quarter of 2024.

Meanwhile, talking about OnePlus entry into the AI world, Kinder Liu, President and COO of OnePlus said, “As OnePlus’ first feature based on generative AI technology, AI Eraser represents the first step in our vision to liberate user creativity through AI and revolutionise the future of photo editing, empowering users to create remarkable photos with just a few touches. This year, we plan to introduce more AI features, and we look forward to their upcoming availability.”

Interestingly, up until now, OnePlus appeared to be somewhat lagging behind in AI compared to its competitors such as Google and Samsung, who introduced AI features with flagship devices like the Pixel and Samsung S24 series, and even rolled out features for older flagships. This created a sense of FOMO among OnePlus users. However, with the introduction of the new AI Eraser, OnePlus users can finally enjoy the AI upgrade, with the possibility of more features arriving in the coming months.
